CUT: New Works on Wood
Sandler Hudson Gallery
Opening Reception: Friday, May 20th, 7-9PM
Exhibition Dates: May 20-July 9, 2016
Sandler Hudson Gallery is pleased to announce a one-person exhibition by internationally-recongnized and Atlanta-based artist, Alex Brewer: (HENSE). Brewer will present a recent body of mixed-media work inspired by his urban installations and sculpture entitled, “CUT: New Works on Wood”.
For this exhibition, Brewer began breaking down shapes from his murals, cutting pieces out of plywood or metal and then applying them to paintings on wood panels or directly on walls.
This collage-based process involved adding and subtracting forms, all the while, Brewer still remaining true to his formalist approach to abstraction. “Unapologetic material use or application of paint and material has been a constant theme in my work for the past few years,” says Brewer.
An Atlanta native, Brewer achieved acclaim and notoriety as a graffiti artist as a teenager in the nineties as HENSE. He has since successfully brought that street culture experience to the studio, and has shown in museums and galleries nationwide, including the High Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and Alabama’s Wiregrass Museum of Art. He is also included in the High Museum’s permanent collection.
Brewer’s commissioned work continues to span world-wide, creating site-specific mural installations in Taiwan: “Very Fun Park” via the Fubon Art Foundation, grain silos in Northam, Western Australia curated by FORM, the ISIL Institute in Peru, the Frank Gehry-designed Facebook Inc. Global Headquarters in Menlo Park, California, Apple Inc.‘s retail store barricade in Miami, Florida and an apartment building facade in Cologne, Germany.
He just returned from Perth, Australia having completed a large-scale ceiling painting for Curtin University and FORM.
Alex Brewer’s work has been placed in numerous private and corporate collections worldwide. Including the High Museum of Art, Facebook Inc., Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Meditech, Langham Hotel, Pasadena, CA., DLA Piper LLC, King and Spalding, Hilton Hotels, Novartis, Cousins Properties, Holder Construction and PRPL Digital Creative Agency.
